205th in Directors' Cup Standings

Postby Dukie » Thu Apr 11, 2019 2:14 pm

I'm putting this on the Football page instead of "Other Sports" because (a) it deserves attention and (b) Football is a component of these standings.

SMU is currently tied for 205th in the Directors' Cup standings. There are only 16 schools with fewer points.

Anybody else remember the days when, no matter the FB or MBB performance, some could still take pride in at least the nonrevenue sports' performance?

Shocking. Very shocking.

Makes it even funnier Hart's name is ever even mentioned for other AD openings.

Disappointing result.

SMU has first class facilities for: basketball, equestrian, golf, tennis, aquatics.

SMU has very good facilities for: football, soccer, crew.

Rowing has had an incredible turnaround as well!!

Hoping the new golf and swimming facilities make a big difference in the near future.

Wow, I never thought I'd see the day that both of my schools are tied in the Director's Cup standings! I guess the good news is that both can only go up from there!

OK, chill. This is just the winter sports standings. It includes mostly sports SMU doesn't have (fencing, hockey, rifle, skiing, wrestling). It doesn't include golf, tennis, equestrian.

To rise significantly, SMU will have to do well in those sports because they can't get any points from baseball, men's track & field, softball, etc.

205th after fall / winter. Men's soccer got us on the board...nothing since then this year. It is a problem if the goal is excellence. However we are missing a TON of sports that the directors cup monitors. Equestrian doesn't count.

Ok seriously now... time for some perspective here. Ya'll hit a nerve.

- We are 205th after the combined fall & winter standings.
- Equestrian does not count towards Directors Cup nor is it a recognized NCAA sport.
- Tennis and Golf will not likely net us significant points this season. Last year spring sports scored 0 points.

SMU Directors Cup ranking history:
1994 (#42)
1995 (#41)
1996 (#15)
1997 (#45)
1998 (#35)
1999 (#31)
2000 (#35)
2001 (#29)
2002 (#47)
2003 (#41)
2004 (#44)
2005 (#47)
2006 (#49)
2007 (#67)
2008 (#70)
2009 (#87)
2010 (#74)
2011 (#59)
2012 (#100)
2013 (#78)
2014 (#96)
2015 (#88)
2016 (#88)
2017 (#108)
2018 (#128)
2019 (#160)
2020 (no rankings- covid)
2021 (#125)
2022 (#89)
2023 (#73)

In the 1995-96 season we had 10 sports ranked in the top 25 nationally. In 2001 we had 8 in the top 15.

Edit: Just found and added 2000-2003 rankings. #OCD

Too 20 in everything we play has become top 200! Basically last in the NCAA. What a job job Ricky Boy. Tell us once again why you got rid got rid of our only coach to beat a Big 12 Champion? After going around him and giving a neighbors kid a full scholarship? Rick, what do you know about tennis? Or any sport? How many season tickets did you sell to Ford last year? Your goal for your department this year?

Grabbing those directors cup rankings was a depressing task as I dug deeper and deeper.

We had 10 nationally ranked sports (not peak rank...end of year rank) in one year! TEN! We were consistent top 50 for a decade or more even when FB & BB struggled...even when we were in the WAC or CUSA.

I understand if people don't care. I didn't care until I dug into it. Dear god.

Even if we move up a bit with the spring sports 205 is still a reflection of the only sports that really matter in the grand scheme of things.

Hart appears to be more interested in The Masters than our spring game which probably shouldn't be a surprise.

The overall decline in the rankings is pathetic.
