Howerton Earns Rimington Trophy Preseason Accolades

NEW YORK (SMU) – Junior Hayden Howerton has been named to the 2019 Rimington Trophy Fall Watch List. The award, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, honors the top center in college football.

The Katy, Texas, native has played in 24 games for the Mustangs in two seasons, starting all 12 at center in 2018. SMU's offense ranked third in the American Athletic Conference last season in passing offense at 271.7 (27th NCAA). For his work in the classroom, he was selected as a member of the AAC All-Academic Team.

As a true freshman in 2017, Howerton started six games at left guard and blocked for an offense that ranked 12th nationally in scoring offense (37.8.), 15th in total offense (478.5) and 19th in passing offense (294.1).

Howerton was also named fourth-team offense on Athlon Sports' All-American Athletic Conference preseason list.

The Rimington Trophy committee uses the Walter Camp Foundation, Sport News and Football Writers Association of America Teams to determine a winner.

Because the selectors of these three All-America teams can place centers in a "mix" of offensive linemen that includes guards and tackles, their 11-man first teams can often have two centers. The Rimington Trophy committee's policy is to count all players that play primarily the center position for their respective teams as centers, even though they may be listed as guards or tackles on the All-America teams.

The center with the most first team votes will be determined the winner. The winner will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation Jan. 18, 2020.
