DBJ: These are Texas' wealthiest college football programs

Postby AfricanMustang » Mon Oct 07, 2019 10:21 am

With college football in full swing, the San Antonio Business Journal looked at the wealthiest college football programs in Texas.

The data comes from the Department of Education's annual Equity in College Athletics data report, which is required under Title IX. It includes teams from all NCAA Divisions, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and junior and community colleges with football programs.

For this year's ranking, we limited it to NCAA teams, regardless of division, and ranked football revenue from 36 Texas colleges and universities.

In North Texas, Texas Christian University ranked highest, coming in at No. 3. Southern Methodist University trailed a few places behind at No. 6.

The University of North Texas jumped nearly $4 million to land between Rice and the University of Houston. The surge at UNT was good enough to put the school in the top 10, settling in at No. 8.

It's no surprise which school sits at the top of the list. The University of Texas at Austin has built a revenue juggernaut that competes with the largest programs in the country. The school also embarked on a massive fundraising campaign to fund a facilities expansion at the university.

That includes a new Hall of Fame that features a 1,200-pound longhorn statue in honor of mascot Bevo. The hall has 392 trophies from across the school's 20 sports teams. One highlight is a roughly 1,400-square-foot National Championship room that will play tribute videos on a big screen that measures 16 feet by 9 feet. The facility also features a visual timeline of all 15 Bevo mascots dating back to 1917 and a social media command center where fans can stay apprised of the latest Longhorn news.

None of that came cheap, but as the ranking shows, the Longhorns are flush.

Is anyone else surprised that we not only had more revenue...but significantly more revenue than UofH (20.5 vs 14.2) LAST YEAR.
