USA Today: Re-Ranking shows Strength of AAC

Postby Water Pony » Tue Oct 29, 2019 1:42 pm

This week's Re-Rank is noteworthy for the heavy presence of teams from the American in the Top 25.

In addition to SMU, the league has No. 20 Cincinnati, No. 23 Memphis, No. 24 Central Florida and No. 25 Navy. The conference is better than the ACC and in terms of its top third can easily rival the Pac-12.

Once Connecticut leaves and USF gets back on track the America is as strong as the PAC and ACC. They should move to an 8 team playoff starting next year and we should get 1 of 6 spots for the PWR 6 Conferences and then leave 2 opens spots for the next best teams whether they're also PWR 6 teams or someone like Boise from MWC or independents like Notre Dame. Honestly outside of Boise and the American no other team ever challenges for a New Years 6 Bowl Game spot anyway. Maybe we should put Boise in for football only with UCONN leaving.

AAC has to find a way to gain market share to be able to have access to the CFP. They will most likely move to the 8 team but they will probably, at best, do 5 Champions from P5, 2 at-large and 1 from G5 Champion. It will be up to the AAC to really drive TV ratings and getting Stadiums to capacity (we can't say jack right now). It's also important for AAC teams to dominate and win big games in the OOC. Sadly with our schedule, the only opportunity is against TCU. I look forward to this team playing them in Ford next year.

AAC's success will not be the driver for expansion of playoffs to 8 teams...it will come from the exclusion of the PAC year after year, although they have a shot at getting in this year depending on whether the Big 10 and SEC cannabalize each other
