Buechele Named Maxwell Award Semifinalist

PHILADELPHIA (MFC/SMU) – Junior Shane Buechele was today named a semifinalist for the 83rd Maxwell Award, honoring the Collegiate Player of the Year.

Buechele has helped lead the Mustangs to an 8-0 record and a top-15 ranking in the AP Poll, a first for both since the 1982 season. The Mustangs are also 4-0 in conference play for the first time since 1986.

Buechele has thrown for 2,325 yards (9th NCAA) and 20 touchdowns (10th NCAA) in 2019, leading the American Athletic Conference in both categories. He also ranks 12th nationally and first in the AAC in completions per game (22.75), passing yards per game (290.6) and total offense (298.8.)

Among active NCAA FBS leaders, Buechele is 11th in passing yards per game (224.5), 12th in completions per game (18.87), 14th in completion percentage (.625), 16th in passing yards (6,961) and 18th in touchdown passes (50) and total offense (7,284).

Twenty student-athletes were named to the list of semifinalists, with Buechele being the lone representative from a Group of Five school. He is also a member of the Manning Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch Lists.

Semifinalist voting will begin on Oct. 30 and will close on Nov. 24. Three finalists will be announced on Nov. 25 and a second round of voting will take place at that time. Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA head football coaches, sports information directors and selected national media.

The winner will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN on Dec. 12. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club's Awards Dinner on March 6, 2020.
