Choate Named Burlsworth Trophy Nominee

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Burlsworth Trophy/SMU) – Junior Gerrit Choate was announced as SMU's nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, given to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a Walk-On and has shown outstanding performance on the field.

Choate enrolled at SMU in January of 2018 after transferring to the Hilltop from Utah. As a sophomore, he played in 12 games, spending the majority of time on special teams. He registered 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Off the field, he was named an American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team selection.

This season, Choate has helped the Mustangs to an 8-1 record and a ranking as high as No. 15 in the AP Poll and No. 14 in the Coaches Poll. He has played in all nine games, registering 10 tackles.

His father, Putt, played for SMU and still holds the career (649) and single-season (253) tackles record.

The Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas Walk-On and All-American offensive lineman.

The Brandon Burlsworth Foundation, in conjunction with Springdale Rotary Club, will host an awards ceremony on Dec. 9, 2019 in Springdale, Arkansas, to honor the three finalists and to announce the 2019 winner.
