Buechele Named Davey O’Brien Award Semifinalist

FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) – Junior Shane Buechele was named one of 16 semifinalists for the 2019 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award as announced by the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee Wednesday. The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the best college quarterback, and is the nation's oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award.

Buechele has thrown for 3,195 yards (5th at SMU) and 28 touchdowns (3rd at SMU) in his first season on the Hilltop.

His 414 yards and five touchdowns in last week's win over ECU gave him an SMU-record nine straight games with multiple passing touchdowns and third 400-yard game this season. The five touchdowns in a game tie for third by a Mustang.

Nationally, Buechele ranks third in passing yards, fourth in passing TDs and passing yards per game and fifth in completions per game.

Among active FBS leaders, he is seventh in completions per game (19.76), eighth in passing yards per game (237.3), 12th in passing yards (7,831), 13th in touchdown passes (58) and 15th in completion percentage (.629) and total offense (8,152).

Buechele is also a semifinalist for the Maxwell Trophy, which honors the collegiate player of the year, and is a member of the CFPA, Manning Award and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch Lists.

The semifinalists were chosen by a combination of the committee's ballots, as well as votes cast courtesy of the Fan Vote. After clearing the first round totals, the Fan Vote at VoteOBrien.org will reopen today (Nov. 13) and remain open until 9 p.m. CT on Nov. 24, for the second round of balloting. Fans are invited to cast their vote for the nation's best college quarterback once daily per email address.

The Davey O'Brien Fan Vote counts as five percent during each round of the voting process, and is combined with the results from the Foundation's national selection committee, which is comprised of journalists, broadcasters, commentators and former winners.

In conjunction with ESPN, the Davey O'Brien Foundation and its National Selection Committee will release the names of the three finalists on Nov. 25. The 2019 Davey O'Brien winner will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards Dec. 12.

The 43rd Annual Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner will be held Feb. 17 at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
