Looking at each conference. AAC has 7 slots and 7 eligible but Memphis might be going to Cotton. ACC has 7.5 slots 11 eligible. Big 12 has 7 slots, 6 eligible. Big Ten has 9 and 9. CUSA has 6 plus one possible 8 eligible. Independents have 2 eligible with BYU getting Hawaii possibly. MAC 8 eligible 6 slots. MWC 7 eligible 7 slots. P-12 7 and 7. SEC 10 eligible 9 slots (but may have two in the playoff). SunBelt 5 eligible 4 slots. So, I think we're probably going to have to fill an AAC slot. Frisco could get an ACC team, a MAC ,CUSA, Sun Belt team or Liberty.
Using pecking order of preference. Memphis = Cotton.
Cincy - Birmingham
Navy - Military
SMU - Frisco
UCF Gasparilla
Temple - Cherumbundi
Tulane - Cure Bowl
Hawaii goes to BYU and MWC.

Now if Navy wants to go to Hawaii, we could go to the Military Bowl and face an ACC team. And Frisco gets Tulane. Cure gets Liberty or Big 10.

Curious when the announcements will be for the tie-ins...I would presume after this Saturday?

That was my comment earlier. It makes perfect sense. Frisco should be a 7-5 or 6-6 AAC team.

It's funny how people keep talking about how there is no pecking order for The American bowls and they are set for geographical interest, then others insist SMU "deserves" better than Frisco.

There are 30-something bowls.
How many 10-2 teams are there?

SMU does deserve a shot at a mid-level Big 12, SEC or Big 10 team.

ESPN owns and operates about 15 bowls including all AAC Bowls except the Military Bowl-they can broker a deal among any one of those bowls to get the best matchup for their schedule-so for example if they want to match pretty evenly matched schools they could send SMU to say Phoenix (Cheese-it Bowl which ESPN also owns) to play San Diego St (9-3) on a Friday Nite and leave the 6-6, Sunbelt and MAC schools to play on Monday through Wednesday nite. Brokered deals have happened on a regular basis. That's just an example, because it would be a decent matchup between 10-2 and 9-3 teams but they would want higher profile teams playing on certain nites. ESPN also owns the Texas Bowl which has been mentioned as a possible destination.

They are probably going to broker the Hawaii Bowl(if Hawaii loses MWC Championship) to let Hawaii in Hawaii bowl because that's technically a MWC or BYU v AAC Bowl-and BYU has technically already accepted the MWC or BYU slot. So MWC gets Hawaii Bowl in exchange for AAC sliding into the Phoenix Bowl could be a legitimate trade

Replace SMU with "10-2 AAC team" then.

I appreciate you trying but much of this isn't right. ACC has far more bowl tie-ins than that, for example:

http://theacc.com/sports/2019/4/24/FB_0424195142.aspx

And the SEC does not have that number of eligible teams.

I heard on the radio that the Independence Bowl in Shreveport is a possibility, because it might not get its SEC team.

Feel like in order to get best bowl, we need to root for a Cincy loss and a Navy loss...SMU should raise hell if we have to play in our own stadium or in Frisco. Talk about debbie downer

Navy winning or losing the Army game has zero impact on our bowl destination. Bowl invitations will be out the week before. Also, Navy finished the season 7-1 ahead of SMU at 6-2. We really want Navy to win so that it boosts the American's non-conference record and we have an additional 10 win team in the conference. We do want Memphis to win, but only because that is the only guarantee that our conference champion ends up in the Cotton Bowl, thus freeing up a top tier bowl spot for the league.

Unfortunately that would require a 32 team playoff system.
