From SMUMustangs.com:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – Senior James Proche was a unanimous first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection, leading four Mustangs on the top squad, while five Mustangs picked up second team honors, as league officials announced conference honors on Wednesday.

Shane Buechele, Xavier Jones and Patrick Nelson join two-time honoree Proche on the first team, while the second team features Kylen Granson, Jaylon Thomas, Rodney Clemons, Delontae Scott and CJ Sanders.

The nine total selections are the most since 2011 and the four first-team accolades the most since the 2016 season.

For the second consecutive season, Proche was named to the league's first team as the conference leader in receiving touchdowns (14, 3rd NCAA) and receptions per game (8.5, 2nd NCAA). Proche also ranks second in receiving yards (1,139) and receiving yards per game (94.9) and is third in punt returns (9.6).

He currently has 38 career receiving TDs, 292 receptions and 3,863 receiving yards, setting SMU records, and his 4,910 career all-purpose yards are also the most for a Mustang. Proche has posted an SMU-record 11 straight games with a receiving touchdown and has 13 career 100+-yard games.

He ranks first on the FBS career active lists for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Proche was named a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards and was a member of the Maxwell and Paul Hornung Award Watch Lists.

A Maxwell and Davey O'Brien Award semifinalist, Buechele leads the AAC in passing yards (3,626, 6th NCAA), passing touchdowns (33, 5th NCAA), completions per game (23.33, 10th NCAA) and points responsible for (216, 8th NCAA). He also ranks second in total offense (310.9) and third in passing efficiency (152.5).

In his first season on the Hilltop, the junior has tied the SMU record for single-season touchdowns and set a program record with 11 straight games with multiple passing TDs. His single-season passing yard total only trails Kyle Padron's 3,828 in 2010.

Doak Walker semifinalist Jones leads The American and is second nationally in rushing touchdowns (21), total touchdowns (23), scoring (11.5) and total points scored (138). His 1,249 rushing yards and 104.1 rushing yards per game rank third in the conference. He has at least one touchdown in each game this season and multiple touchdowns in eight games. In the Mustangs' final regular-season game against Tulane, he posted his eighth 100-yard game of the season. Among NCAA active leaders, his rushing and total TDs rank fifth.

SMU's final first-team selection is the program's new all-time single-season sack leader Nelson. With two in the Mustangs' final regular-season contest, Nelson brought his single-season total to 12.0. The 1.0 per game is good for second in the league and eighth in the nation. Nelson also posted a career-high 3.5 TFLs in the game for 17.0 in 2019, good for third in the AAC and top-15 nationally. Overall, the senior is the Mustangs' second leading tackler with 78 on the season.

In his first season of action on the Hilltop, tight end Granson earned second-team offense honors after a strong second half of the season. Granson finished the regular season with nine receiving touchdowns, eight of which came in the last six games of the season, and 628 receiving yards.

Thomas has started every game for the Mustangs at left tackle, blocking for an offense that leads the conference and ranks sixth nationally in scoring offense at 43.0. They also ranked second in the league in total offense (495.3, 9th NCAA) and passing offense (309.3, 12th NCAA).

On defense, Clemons has a conference leading four interceptions in 2019, placing him 14th nationally. The senior has 71 tackles, including 3.0 for loss, eight pass break-ups, a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a blocked kick.

Scott sits atop the tackles-for-loss column in The American with 18.0 on the season (1.5/game), a number that ranks second on SMU's all-time list. His 10.0 sacks are second on the team, and tied for third in a season for a Mustang. Overall, Scott has 39 tackles and a team-high three forced fumbles this season.

Sanders is the Mustangs' final selection, named to the second team as a specialist. This season, he leads the league in combined kick return yards (849) and kickoff return touchdowns (2). He is currently the NCAA's career active leader in kickoff returns (123), kick return yards (3,050), combined kick return yards (3,373) and combined kickoff return touchdowns (6).

The Mustangs are 10-2, posting their most wins since 1984 and their sixth 10-win season in program history. The 6-0, perfect record at Ford Stadium this season marks the first time SMU has won every home game since 1968 (4-0 at the Cotton Bowl) and the first time to win every home game on campus since 1939 (5-0 at Ownby Stadium). The six conference wins are the most league wins since 2010 when SMU went 6-2 to win the Conference USA West Division.

I notice the all-conference teams have 13 people on offense and 13 people on defense. Maybe they'll hand out some participation trophies while they're at it.

Usually they include kicker, kick returner, punter, punt returner.

Is CJ Sanders the first kick returner to be all-conference since Deion Sanders Jr.?

Granson should have been on the first team.
Nobody in the AAC has a better tight end.
