SWC Trivia Challenge

Postby smitty329 » Mon Dec 16, 2019 2:18 pm

I saw my 82 year-old uncle this weekend on a trip to Syracuse to visit my Mom. Ever a sports and football fan (Colgate Alumni), and familiar with my association with SMU, he asked me a trivia question regarding the SWC.

On what day did the five religious affiliated schools of the SWC all win a football game?

Not sure why/where the question came from - I have reached out to him to ask. I did some research to confirm the five schools and was able to find a date where 4 of the 5 won a game. Figured I would tap the knowledge of this board as well regarding a potential source for the trivia question and answer(s).

Pretty sure all five never won a game on the same day while in the SWC.

Yes - not all 5 were in the SWC at the same time. However they all were or had been in the SWC on this day.

The Southwest Athletic Conference was organized in 1914. Charter members included the University of Texas, Texas A&M University, Baylor University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) University, Southwestern University of Georgetown and Rice University.

Phillips was a member in 1920, for only one year and never won a conference game. Never even scored a point in an SWC contest.

Southwestern was a member in 1915 and 1916.

Things would have been much different if LSU had joined and OU had stayed in.

For purposes of this trivia question, is the Cult that is Texas A&M considered a religion?

From 1923 (when TCU joined the SWC) to 1933 (when Phillips disbanded their football program), the only day I can find where 4 teams won was 10/17/1931:

Baylor W 19–7 over Arkansas
TCU W 6-0 over Texas A&M
SMU W 21-12 over Rice
Southwestern W 14-7 over St. Edwards

But Phillips lost the day before to Oklahoma City University 28-14:

Very Good SmooPower!!! - That's the date I was targeting but after posting this on Monday I did the same newspaper search and found the Phillips loss the day before.

Here are some other "close" dates but nothing definitive that I could find.

October 15, 1920 (Friday) SMU beat Howard Payne 14 - 0, and on Saturday 10/16/1920, Phillips beat Hardin Simmons 13 - 7, TCU beat Arkansas 19 - 2, Baylor beat Trinity (Texas) 20 – 6 and Southwestern was idle that weekend. So 4 teams won that weekend (and none of the 5 teams lost) with one game being played on Friday. Also, this was before TCU joined the SWC.

There were 2 other weekends October 14/15, 1927 and October 19/20, 1934 where SMU, Baylor, TCU, and Southwestern all won. Phillips lost to Oklahoma City 9 - 7 on October 14th per article in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper dated October 15th 1927. Phillips had cancelled the program by 1934.

Curious if anyone had heard this question before or if through senility, the question may have been modified from "In what 2 day span did the 5 teams with a religious and SWC affiliation not lose or tie a football game?
