Dykes announces staff assignment changes

DALLAS (SMU) – Head coach Sonny Dykes has announced coaching staff assignment changes ahead of the 2020 football season.

Chris Brasfield will take over as special teams coordinator and Ra'Shaad Samples will assume the role of running backs coach, while Josh Martin will continue to serve as tight ends coach. These, along with the addition of Offensive Coordinator and quarterbacks coach Garrett Riley and the elevation of A.J. Ricker to Co-Offensive Coordinator and offensive line coach complete the staff changes for next season.

Brasfield, who brought with him extensive special teams experience to SMU, makes the transition after serving as running backs coach in 2018 and 2019.

Brasfield mentored Doak Walker Award semifinalist Xavier Jones, who set SMU single-season records for total touchdowns (25), rushing touchdowns (23) and total points (150) in 2019. He was a first-team all-conference selection and had at least one touchdown in each game last season and multiple in nine of 13 games in 2019. Jones finished with 244 carries for 1,276 yards.

In his first season at SMU, Brasfield mentored Paul Hornung Award Watch List member Braeden West, who led the Mustangs with 138 carries for 589 yards and six touchdowns and finished his career 10th all-time at SMU with 2,519 career-rushing yards and seven career 100-yard games.

The 2019 season was the first for Samples on the Hilltop, serving as an assistant on the offensive side of the ball. In addition to the Mustangs' success running the ball, James Proche was named a second-team All-American by the FWAA and was a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist.

In 2019, he posted an SMU-record 12 straight games with a receiving TD and a single-season record 15 touchdowns. He tied for the national lead with 111 receptions and finished his career as the active FBS leader in career receiving TDS, receiving yards and receptions.

As tight ends coach, Martin helped lead Kylen Granson to one of the most successful seasons for a Mustang tight end. Granson finished the season with 721 receiving yards, an SMU single-season record for a tight end. He was second on the team with nine touchdowns and 43 receptions and went on to earn all-conference second-team honors.

In addition to the recent staff assignment changes, Dykes announced the hiring of Riley as Offensive Coordinator and quarterbacks coach and the elevation of Ricker to Co-Offensive Coordinator in addition to his offensive line duties on Jan. 21.

Riley comes to the Hilltop after spending the 2019 season as running backs coach at Appalachian State, and was set to be promoted to Offensive Coordinator. The Mountaineers went 13-1 last season, including a Sun Belt Championship and a win in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl over UAB. Riley mentored Darrynton Evans to Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year honors after posting 1,740 all-purpose yards, including 1,250 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns.

Prior to his time at Appalachian State, Riley spent three seasons at Kansas (2016-18) in various capacities and served as the Jayhawks' play caller.

Ricker arrived on the Hilltop in January of 2019 and coached an offensive line that helped SMU to national rankings of seventh in scoring offense (41.8), ninth in total offense (489.8) and 13th in passing offense (309.0). The Mustangs' highest ranking in those categories the previous season was 27th in passing offense, while neither scoring or total ranked inside the top 50.

SMU hosts 2019 AAC Champion Memphis, AAC East Division Champion Cincinnati, in-state rival Houston and Navy at Ford Stadium in 2020. In non-conference action, the Mustangs welcome Stephen F. Austin in the 2020 home opener on Sept. 12 and Metroplex rival TCU Sept. 26 for the Battle for the Iron Skillet.

SMU is coming off a historic season that saw the Mustangs go 10-3, winning the most games since 1984 and earning their highest national ranking since 1985.
