Old Football Photos from the Archives

Postby digman52 » Thu Mar 05, 2020 3:54 pm

After posting a few old basketball photos, I thought a football thread was worthy of a few as well. Hope there are some good shots in your archives.

These pics were from 67-68 range, when I was a high school photographer for the Hillcrest High School paper, and got on the field for a homecoming game. Not many football shots, but here they are.

Those Cotton Bowl pics really make you appreciate having Ford Stadium on campus these days. We rarely needed the number of seats the Cotton Bowl and Texas Stadium had, even in the Dicker-James era when we were competing for national championships

And no...that cheerleader was before my time but I can see she caught someone's eye.

Is that Bob Hope in one of them? I remember him being the honorary Homecoming King.

Hope is in 3 of them. I remember him spending a lot of time at SMU during my years there. They premiered a play there at one time and the athletes were all invited to attend the night of dress rehearsal. I have many lapses of memory at my age but Michelle Lee in a slinky black outfit with no undergarments is well etched into my mind.

Bob Hope visited the ATO house and shot pool with a bunch of us in the early 70's

Hope was a great fan of SMU. Willis Tate was likely the best present day president SMU has had and certainly light years ahead of what we have now.

That's from 1968 -Isn't this the day MM65 got his first kiss from the Homecoming Queen

Going by his moniker, I would think his kiss was 1965.

There were some tax experts at the SMU School of Law who helped Hope save a lot of money. I think Charles Galvin was one of them. He was also pretty good at twising donors' arms.

Allegedly, SMU home game versus ND ('49, '54,'56 ?), a few students "borrowed" Hope from his hotel room and showed him a good time. There has always been a question of which fraternity these folks were a part of...some noted Phi Delta Theta, others were mentioned. Apparently administration types became involved at some point trying to sort out the damage to SMU's reputation, and Hope basically noted that a good time was had by all and that ended it...to a point. Hope continued to visit SMU frequently when in town for the balance of his career.

He frequented Dallas nightspots (Adolphus Hotel was a big deal then as now per "downtown Dallas") as well as Campisi's. Hope was delivered to his room in the wee hours to a rather unhappy wife. She was a BIG backer of ND, and a committed Catholic....Hope, not so much.

Heard this from Addison Bradford, JD back in the day, and a friend of Hope's.
