Why not? They’re a decent CUSA program, they bring a ton of fans to Ford every other year, and it generates some interest in a crowded Metroplex sports scene. If we’re playing a CUSA team from Texas, I’d much rather play UNT than Rice, UTEP, or UTSA; three teams that will bring zero fans to Ford and that no casual fan in DFW will care about

Agreed. UNT is actually a good "local" team to schedule and if we are playing TCU every year, the schedule can be set so that we will play one of those teams at Ford and one on the road every year. Still leaves 2 non-conference games to rotate other schools in and out on 2 year home/home deals and also leaves the option of taking on a big name/paycheck game on the road while filling out the home schedule with a Southland/FCS school that doesn't require a return trip to their place.

IIRC- UTEP used to bring a pretty good crowd. Remember watching some of those games in Ford.

I mean, I understand why people don't want to play UNT but they are the best option we have outside of TCU. They are a FBS team that actually brings a couple of fans, and in some cases a couple thousand, and we have mostly owned the series. There's no sense in playing a SHSU or ACU if a Rice or UNT is available. We have to keep them.

That would be a good home/home series for SMU. I'd rather play UTEP than any FCS school but they would want a home/home deal because they draw much better than we do in most years. I see that we have La Tech on future schedules and I like that series, too but don't remember how well their fans traveled. La Tech will be a much tougher opponent than UTEP...more like the Arkansas State series was.

It was ten times the crowd Rice ever brought. But, only a tenth of the UNT crowd.

As long as we are having to schedule a G5 school based on how many fans they attract to our 35,000 seat stadium, we still have a LONG way to go. We finally have the talent and depth to compete with schools in the big boy pool, so let’s schedule accordingly.

To be completely honest, outside of TCU and whatever P5 you pick, I really don’t care what other schools we schedule to fill out the OOC. At some point our fans have to start showing up to see our team play, not the opponent’s fans. See our basketball team until Jank ran the program in the ground.

And how many times have we made that comment, i.e., "our fans need to show up to watch OUR team no matter who the opponent"? It just isn't the case with SMU fans.

Fair point but if we ever truly want to be considered for a P5 invite we are going to have to find a way to get SMU fans, alums and students to consistently show up for games. That is on the admin to make it happen. If it never does, neither will the P5 dream.

It’s a lot easier to fill a 7,000 seat arena than a 32,000 seat stadium. And even big schools don’t sell out their non-marquee OOC games; to have a program like UNT that brings a bunch of fans to Ford, generates some local buzz and is in a place where we should beat them every year is nice.

This game has become more of a rivalry game than most care to admit. There is of course the schools' proximity and fan interest and UNT understandably plays with a chip on their shoulder. SMU is 32-6-1 all-time vs NTSU/UNT but never played them anywhere but in Dallas until 1990. Since that time, we are only 6-4 against them and have gone 1-4 in Denton. I like playing both TCU and UNT every year and wish TCU would play both of us for the Metroplex Mayors' Trophy every year, but I understand the mathematically challenged Big XII creates non-conference scheduling limitations for the toads.

I'm with you 100% on this. Small, private academics-driven school. Certainly a winnable game, as the teams now stand, but also capable of beating us if we don't show up. Within driving distance. Looooooong history.

Plus, maybe we can find another Granson or Abercrumbia who wants to play for SMU.

There's no reason not to play them.

Don't understand the love of playing Rice by some on this board. Boring team and draws nobody. Smallest D-1 school after Tulsa - who we are forced to play already. No student or anyone under 50 cares about them, and the only reason to play them would be nostalgia. We already play their big brother every year as it is - so they dont add any geography. They will have to give up football at some point since it is unsustainable for them. Please can we drop them from the list of maybes?

TCU would never schedule UNT on an annual basis, but we absolutely should. Frankly many of the arguments people make on here against playing UNT sound like arguments TCU fans make for not wanting to schedule us.

NTSU, no matter what happens, is a directional school. We already play in conference ECU, USF and UCF. Those teams have some national interest. NTSU has no name recognition outside of the region. The only thing they bring is that they want to play us. I would drop them in an instant for any lower tier P5 school or G5 school with some clout. They are a 1/2 step up from a FCS school and better than an open date. The unfortunate reality is we probably can't find anybody better who'll schedule us.
