Greatest SMU Wide Receiver

Postby EastStang » Wed Jun 17, 2020 10:10 am

This one has lots of possibilities. Raymond Berry, Jerry LeVias, Emmanuel Sanders, Trey Quinn, Courtland Sutton, James Proche, Aldrick Robinson, Kenny Harrison and many more. Really hard to pick because all were game changers. For me its between LeVias and Proche. LeVias changed the SWC. But I'm going with Proche simply because he made catches that I've never seen made before.

I am putting Levias in a category all by himself. So many intangibles that go with him that I do not think it is fair to limit him to this alone.

So for best receiver I am going with another of my former teammates, Gary Hammond. Soft hands, quick, excellent routes. Gary was so good and so versatile that he was named All SWC 3 times at 3 different positions. But had he been able to play receiver all 3 years I am confident he would have been a very high draft choice.

Definitely a very difficult choice for WRU.

Raymond Berry found his greatness in the NFL. My choice is Courtland Sutton. A true freak of nature. Best college receiver I've ever seen in person. Proche is my emotional favorite. Yes, what a run we've had with receivers. Roberson's just next up.

There was one name, I kept trying to remember as belonging in the conversation. Miracle Man Bobby Leach.

He's the only SMU receiver where I've ever been to his wedding. He's got a nice little brood going right now with his gorgeous wife. Great guy

Here's one for the kids on this board who don't know Bobby Chase: https://youtu.be/2nKFDCD8WK4

We've come so far, it's actually not hard right now to imagine an invite to play with the P5 big boys in a few seasons. Of course that jinxes it and we're now up for the Sun Belt

No question at all--Jerry Levias. SMU All-American, none of these other players were All-American. If he isn't listed as our all time best receiver then he is at least our all time best special teams player. He had speed, in the days of long grass and outdoor stadiums. He was quick and he was shifty, he left whole teams running around like drunken ants! Think Bobby Leech on steroids. He personally beat A&M one year in the old Cotton Bowl. I've never ever seen an entire crowd stand every time a kick off or punt might go to him. The whole stadium lit up when he broke into the open before the pass even left our QB's hand. I've seen all the others play, but Jerry outshined every one of them in terms of excitement. Remember he was, when he played for SMU, the best amongst his peers. None of the others can say that.

And, he played under enormous personal pressure!

Ah yes, the greatness of Craig Swann.
"I was about to throw up for sure. I was about to puke all over (producer) Ted Gangi."
Almost wrecked my car when I heard that call live.

Haha. Top 10 in homer calls. And then my young son, now 24 years old, ends up on the front page of Ponyfans in his Bobby Chase halloween costume
