OOps accidentally posted this in Basketball thread.
Lots of choices here. Don Meredith; Mike Livingston, Chuck Hixson, Mike Ford, Fred Benners, Shane Bueschle, Ben Hicks, Garrett Gilbert, Jerry Rhome, Mike Romo, Ramon Flanagan, or Lance McIlhenny. Even Doak Walker. Just about any of them would be defensible for any number of reasons. I'm going to pick McIlhenny because he ran the ship during the Pony Express. He didn't have to pass much, his passes weren't very pretty, but we won with him under center. For a pure passer, Hixson wins that honor.

Meredith..Transformational player on otherwise weaker teams.
McIlhenny...Transformational player on rising and then outstanding teams.
Benners...So much other talent that he is often overlooked.
Hixon...A stone cold killer with a great arm and mind.
Livingston...A leader.
Ford...Best arm of the bunch, and a leader on some rising Mustang teams.

Flanagan, Hicks, Gilbert and Shane are a great stable of QBs.

McIlhenny is the greatest option quarterback of all time in my opinion, but my vote is Ramon Flanigan.

Well I did QB for the best ever name for an intramural team "Frolicking Zombies" so I'm gonna have to vote with my bias here.

Me.

The History is endless... I gotta go with Lance, because of how dang good we was and that I was at every single game, home and away. Most memorable being 20-6 slashing AT Texas.

Go Ponies!!

Well, I was at SMU with Don Meredith. I love Lance but Meredith had the crowd on its feet every time he had the ball.

Agree, and Danny Don was so talented that he was the one who put the Dallas Cowboys on the front page of the national sports section. Then, he was an outstanding and funny sports announcer. By all his accomplishments, Meredith is the greatest in SMU History.

Poor Justin Willis. Few bad for him. Hope he ended up doing okay outside of football.

Mike Ford may want to talk to you......btw, an interesting Chuck Hixon career stat - 40 TDs / 56 Ints

Greatest QBs All-Time are

Don Meredith - 2x All-American

Lance McIlhenny - 3x 1st team All-SWC & All-Time Winningest QB in the History of Texas HS/College & in the SWC

everyone else is looking up at greatness.

Me too, he was in my speech class. I'll always remember his sense of humor there and on MNF with Howy and Frank. And of course his role in making the Cowboys great.

I have a standard in my mind as to what a great QB looks like. Tall with a solid frame and a cannon for an arm. McIlhenny and Ramon were not that. Still, they’ve got my vote in terms of sentimental favorites. Both were just winners.

I have seen most of the QB listed and I will say that if Fred Benners had modern day receiver such as Sander, Sutton etc he would still hold records for passing could not run but with his arm why run.

Doak Walker. We've built a statue and our only Heisman. Done.

The legends of Doak Walker and Kyle Rote were probably the reason I chose SMU.
