Sonny Dykes confirmed in his Monday media session that backup quarterback Terrance Gipson has entered the transfer portal. Dykes said he thought Gipson had been considering the move "for a while" and that he and SMU football would do what they can to help Gipson find a new school where he can "have some success, get a degree and have a good life."
Dykes added that Derek Green is now Shane Buechele's backup.

With Preston Stone coming in, he saw the writing on the wall. I think his insertion into the game in the 4th quarter and subsequent removal cemented it for him as it showed that Sonny doesn't trust him with running the offense.

To fumble at that point in the game was pretty telling

Not certain I blame him. It seems he would have four additional years to play, assuming he is granted immediately eligibility.

Not to mention that he would take some SMU credits with him and have a chance to earn an undergraduate degree well before his eligibility expires

All the best, Terrance! We'll cheer for you as long as you're not going to Coog High

Wish him well but leaving your team mid season certainly calls into question your commitment.

It’s always fun questioning someone else’s motives.

What exactly did it tell? He was stripped from behind, which happens to many ballcarriers.

At a time when your job is to burn clock and protect the ball? We weren't trying to run up the score in what had become a lopsided game at that point.

I agree on SMU's intent at that point of the game. However that turnover was caused by an aggressive play by the defender, not carelessness and/or sloppiness.

I guess Sonny disagreed that there was no "error" on Gipson's part. I was disappointed at the time that he was pulled immediately after that play and never returned (thought it might be a good teaching moment). Bottom line is that he will have a better opportunity to earn playing time elsewhere and I wish him nothing but the best.

Follow the lead from HCSD. Gipson will always be a Mustang. No need to question the kid. Wish him all the success with his future move.
