In his weekly media availability, Sonny Dykes addressed the idea of current seniors taking advantage of the extra year granted by the NCAA because of the coronavirus pandemic to stay in school to play another season while pursuing additional academic goals. He didn't name any names, but said coaches had had conversations with some of the seniors, and then discussed how people want to attend SMU and play for the Mustangs, that the culture is one in which he thinks "several" will want to return. How many spots will be available for returning seniors, as opposed to incoming freshmen or transfers, is not yet known.

So you're saying there's a chance ... of one more year of Buechele while Stone takes a redshirt that includes playing in 4 games.

I wonder how that actually breaks down as far as the NFL?

Does Shane enter the NFL Draft if he is likely to be a 4th round pick, but not if he is a 6th round pick?

Does staying another year move him up in the following year's draft? Guess that depends...

Obviosuly lots of unknowns....but it woud be interesting as to what round means "enter the NFL draft" and what round means "stay at SMU".

Yep, it might be the best call for him to go now, will depend on the depth of the draft pool otherwise, as well as how he finishes the season. Lots of unknowns--including Mr. Stone's willingness to start off on a 5-year track. I also wonder where Shane is in gradskool, and if he gets a degree "too soon" would he have to start another program.

I would expect the key for a lot of seniors who might be given the option of returning will hinge more on educational issues than any NFL future. Depending on how many guys are 4th year vs 5th year seniors, whether they have already earned undergraduate degrees or are working on, or would like to be working on graduate degrees. Should be interesting and there is always the transfer market as well. Next year could really be special...especially if Buechele is someone who is considering staying and it would afford Stone a great opportunity to learn the system while continuing to mature physically and get a jump start on whatever degree he chooses to pursue.

Did I hear that correctly? Seniors coming back for that extra "pandemic" year will NOT count against the 85 limit?

Buchelle is a good college QB but he's 6'1" and cant really run. I dont see him being drafted before 6-7 Rd
