Buechele Selected As Candidate For Senior CLASS Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (SMU) – Shane Buechele is one of 30 FBS student-athletes to be named as a candidate for the 2020-21 Senior CLASS Award.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Buechele and girlfriend Paige Vasquez raised over $50,000 to be donated to the Mayor's Disaster Relief Fund for COVID-19 relief in the City of Dallas.

Throughout his collegiate career, Buechele has also regularly participated at Boys and Girls Club events, visits to Dell Children's Hospital, elementary school visits and various youth football camps while at SMU and Texas.

"In addition to his talent and established community service, Shane's drive can be contributed to exceptional academic achievement," Head Coach Sonny Dykes said. "Shane is already equipped with a Bachelor's Degree from Texas, a Master's Degree from SMU and is in progress for a second Master's certification. The desire to achieve all that is possible lives strong in Shane, and I can't wait to see where his journey takes him."

On the field, Buechele leads the nation in passing yards (2,781), is eighth in passing TDs (21), 10th in passing yards per game (309.0) and points responsible for (132) and 14th in total offense (320.7).

He has multiple TDs in 17 of the last 21 games and 55 career TDs at SMU (2nd), with 85 overall. He adds 13 career 300-yard games (11 at SMU), including six this season.

Among FBS active leaders, Buechele ranks first in completions (917) and passing yards (11,346), second in passing TDs (85) and total offense (11,814) and fourth in total TDs (92).

To determine the overall Senior CLASS Award winner, the 30 candidates are narrowed to 10 finalists at the end of the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system available to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs: community, classroom, character and competition. Along with the winner, the 10 finalists will be awarded Senior CLASS Award first- or second-team honors.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in December. For more information on the candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
