Maybe next year

Postby SMUstang » Sat Nov 28, 2020 4:36 pm

How many times will we be saying this? What does it take to have a winning attitude? ECU just wanted this game more than SMU did. We can just not finish a season. No excuses.

Next Year. Next Year. Next Year!
Well, because we didn’t have enough depth. We had x, y and z hurt. We didn’t have an IPF. We had COVID. We had poor recognition. The other team had two weeks to prepare for us. We didn’t have a legit QB. We didn’t have a replacement Left Tackle. We didn’t have a special teams coach. We ran out of hot water in our locker room. We didn’t have enough fan support. It was the first year for coach x. What else am I missing?

I'm as disappointed as anybody...but "Next Year" for what?

I think we need to get a grip...live in reality.

Last year SMU won 10 games for the first time since 1984.....'84!
Ronald Reagan was President!
So that's probably not anywhere near automatic every year.

This year we've won 7 thus far....hopefully we win at least one of the two left.
(Coogs or bowl)

I know we all want to win 10, 11 games a year.

But come on....is that realistic?

I think with Sonny we are going to win 7-10 games a year...kind of like a lot of teams.
Some years 7, some years 8, some years 9, some years 10...what do you really expect?
7-10 wins a year ain't a bad gig....go to a bowl...sure beats the dry years.

Realistically SMU has to "settle" since we will never be the pony express again.

No excuse for losing to a 2-6 team.

Set your goals low enough and you may well achieve them. .

Is it that crazy to assume that we can win consistently 10 games a season in our conference? Asking for a friend.

You can't judge anything by this year. It is a weird season for everyone.

Let the kids develop we will be very good on both sides of the line. That is when you will see us be strong through the whole season.

Including TEs, we have 25 on the roster responsible for running routes and catching passes. Roberson went down and there was an obvious drop off in explosiveness. Gray's productivity dropped when Roberson went out, and he never looked 100% after the Memphis game. Rice and Page both looked like they were playing injured.

Without those first two we are not the same team. Other teams can go several deep and not miss a beat. Heck ECU trotted out two white guys, the waterboy and Rudy, and shred our defense.

Some of these players on our roster appear to have the physical tools, and at least on paper were high value recruits. Why aren't they ready to perform? We need a couple of Robersons and a couple of Grays ready every year, with a few more in the pipeline.

This game felt like the FAU game - a real gut punch to end the year. I hope we can redeem the season at Houston, maybe TCU, and a bowl.

All this talk about receivers, etc. is nice and informative, but it was our defense that played like cardboard cutouts the first half.

I hope Sonny makes some tough decisions concerning some of our players moving on next year. We need to toughen up our offensive and defensive lines and we have too many players just occupying roster numbers, especially on the offensive line.
