December 2, 1995: 25 years since the final SWC football game

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Wed Dec 02, 2020 10:37 am

Good cover story on ESPN today.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/30424417/i-wishof-well-demise-southwest-conference-25-years-later

The Southwest Conference ended 25 years ago the same way it lived: with fire in its belly and pettiness in its heart.

Even its ceremonial closing came with a tinge of spite. Two football games were to be played that final Saturday, Dec. 2, 1995, but Rice officials were determined theirs would be last. So when they discovered that Texas and Texas A&M -- who were playing for the SWC title -- were locked into a 2:30 p.m. kickoff on ABC, Rice scheduled its kickoff with rival Houston for 4 p.m., to the dismay of the Longhorns and Aggies.

Excellent article. It kind of put our payment of players as more reactionary to what other schools were doing, than being the lone bad actor.

I like that they featured SMU prominently. They mention 3 players in Doak Walker, Earl Campbell, and Eric Dickerson.

Still bugs me that Grant T comes off slightly above it all...not sure he was as clean as promoted.

I remember talking to a couple of Baylor alums back then who found it hard to believe that players were not getting some "help" to get them to come there. Saint Teaff and Saint Frank both grating.

I like that the embedded video has a couple brief Dan Freiberger (I think?) and Mike Romo highlights!

I had a good friend and former co-worker who was an aggie and he had a close friend who was a Baylor alum. Both guys were "influential" alums of their respective schools and I remember my friend telling me they were watching signing day announcements together when an OL recruit both schools were after chose A$M over Baylor. My friend chuckled telling me how his Baylor buddy was upset because the recruit was wearing clothes the Baylor booster had bought him as he announced he would be attending A$M. Of course I told my friend that was nothing compared to Dickerson coming to SMU driving the Trans A$M
