SMU quarterback Shane Buechele announced on his Twitter account that he will pursue his professional career.

"It has been an honor to finish my college football career at SMU and to have done it while obtaining a quality education and achieving a Master’s degree. I want to thank the coaches, staff and fans for making my experience one I’ll never forget. To my family and friends, thank you for always believing in me and encouraging me every step of the way. To my teammates, my brothers .. Y’all became family the moment I stepped on campus, and that won’t ever change.

As I reflect on my years of playing college ball at Texas and SMU, all I can feel is thankfulness and an overwhelming joy and excitement for what’s to come.

With that being said, I am officially declaring for the NFL Draft. I’m excited to see where God leads me next."

Not a surprise. It won't shock me if he goes in the fifth or sixth round.

I am so thankful he chose SMU.

No disappointment whatsoever as I fully expected it. I hope he does well in the draft and in the league.

Just wondering out loud....(we do that in the offseason...lol) if this move by Shane says anything at all about our program?

If he is willing to leave to maybe be a 6th round pick?

In hindsight should he have left last year after the team and he personally had a better year?

If he thought our team is going to be a much better team next year and he may be 6th rounder this year, wouldn't he come back and try to be a higher draft pick coming off a better year next year?

I think Shane is a fine young man with a bright future no matter what he ends up doing. Glad he was a Mustang and wish him the very best.

If he came back it would have been his sixth season in college football. At some point, people want to move on with their lives and get paid. I don't think his decision to go pro says anything about our program. I would expect everyone to do the same save for a McKenzie Milton type or someone like Reggie Roberson that need to prove they are healthy and still productive.

Buechele succeeded in high school, at Texas and at SMU. My guess is he'll succeed at the next level, too.

Good luck Shane!
