Josh has been the definition of a "journeyman QB", that's for sure. I know he spent a little time with the Carolina Panthers but don't remember him playing much. Apparently he liked what he saw in the Charlotte area and I did not realize he had moved to the town just to the west of where I now live and helped coach at one of the high schools in a very affluent suburb of Charlotte.

As I recall, his dad was a H.S. coach so no surprise if he spends the rest of his career coaching football at some level. He's aiming high, that's for sure.

Sure has. It's still amazing how he was yo-yo'ed in and out of the lineup, ultimately leading to his transfer.

Cavan was tough on him, that's for sure. Will always remember a 3rd and long against Rice when Josh easily could have run to pick up the 1st down with a wide open field but instead tried to drill a mid range throw to a WR hugging the sideline (and missed, of course). Cavan just blew up on him for having pre-determined where he was going on that play. I think Josh learned from that and undoubtedly had a lot of those kind of learning experiences along the way. Might make a really good coach some day.

believe it was phil bennet came in and dissed him badly, causing him to transfer to sam houston. he was better than what was on the campus the next year. hung around the nfl for several years therafter tho never hit big there. didn't have a lot of talent around him while here. i feel a sense of loyalty to the former pony.

No, McCown was gone before Bennett got here. McCown played at SMU 1998-2000 and Cavan was coach from 1997-2001. It was a Cavan blunder. I believe Cavan is the worst coach in program history.

And probably still the best post DP recruiter.

I wouldn't go that far. Have to remember Cavan was still operating under some academic restrictions, was the 1st coach after SMU was dropped from the SWC and did not have Ford Stadium help in recruiting. I don't think it was as much the X's and O's as it was the Jimmys and Joes. McCown was a good find but was slow developing as I recall.

Cavan won almost 40% of games he coached whereas Bennett won about 25% of his...and then there is Tom Mason who inherited a mess and at least got one win!

Cavan had the benefit of playing WAC games with SWC recruits. He was a terrible coach and is a jerk. I was ecstatic when Copeland finally got rid of him. He didn't even look the part of a football coach.

Interviewing for Texans HC again this year - second interview today.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/01/28/josh-mccown-gets-second-interview-to-be-texans-head-coach/

The Texans are serious about hiring the completely inexperienced Josh McCown as their head coach.

McCown is getting his second interview with the Texans today, according to NFL Network.

It is believed that McCown is the only candidate to get a second interview. That’s usually a good sign that he’s viewed as the top candidate by the team’s decision-makers, including owner Cal McNair, executive vice president of football operations Jack Easterby and General Manager Nick Caserio.

McCown had a long career as an NFL quarterback, mostly as a backup, and has never coached other than some volunteer work at the high school level. He would be the least experienced head coach hired in the NFL in many decades if the Texans hire him.

Correct. I vividly remember Cavan being surprised to learn that McCown was transferring from reading it in the newspaper. I thought to myself at the time, "Gee, if I were a HC, I think I'd want to have a better relationship with my MVP, so that I wouldn't have to learn about him leaving the program through the freakin' newspaper."

He SHOULD have viewed McCown that way, but clearly Cavan didn't view him as his MVP, or he wouldn't have played "revolving QBs" with McCown and David Page.

It’s still funny that Page left the program to tour with his band.

The irony is that Page struggled while we had McCown and then when he started to blossom he decided to forego his eligibility for a position at Ernst & Young.

That wasn't Page, that was Kelan Luker.
