The Athletic: SMU among programs that jump to 'Power' G5

In its Mailbag section, The Athletic was asked which programs could be "the next UCF/Cincy? Meaning that the program has the resources to be seen as a 'Power' G5?

SMU: The Mustangs are new to this position, coming off their best stretch since before they received the NCAA Death Penalty in the 1980s. Sonny Dykes has tapped into the program’s potential, recruiting the state of Texas and bringing home transfers from other schools. SMU has a nice on-campus stadium, and Dykes convinced the school to build an indoor practice facility. As a private school, SMU has some disadvantages when it comes to a pool of walk-ons, and we’ll have to see if this success can sustain through multiple head coaches at some point, but the Mustangs are trending up. And there are big-money boosters. That’s always important.

“Multiple head coaches” - nope, someone should tell the writer that Sonny is a lifer (unless SMU screws it up and doesn’t give him the pay he deserves at some point!)

I still believe in Power 6 but if not then we are definitely Power G5.

Power G5, what is he talking about? AAC probably is the best non-P5 conference with SMU, Houston, Tulsa, Navy, Memphis, UCF, and Cincy. With Tulane and those schools, you have some historical bona fides. Unfortunately, I'm an old geezer now, so memories of SWC greatness are fading. We all just have to beat every P5 team on our schedule.

Hail Geezers!

I see a section at Ford set aside just for our generation...slightly to the north of the "blue hairs and no hairs..."
