Bentley IV, Roberson Jr. Named To Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List

TYLER, Texas (SPORTyler/SMU) – Maxwell Award Watch List selections Ulysses Bentley IV and Reggie Roberson, Jr., were today named candidates on the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, as announced by SPORTyler and the Tyler Chamber of Commerce.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

Bentley IV was a Freshman All-America selection by the FWAA and the conference Rookie of the Year in 2020 after leading the league with 913 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns, which set the SMU freshman single-season record.

He finished the season as one of only two freshmen nationally with 10+ total TDs (12), and ranked top 20 in the FBS in rushing TDs, rushing yards and total TDs.

He was named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Honorable Mention list twice last season (Nov. 3, Sept. 22).

Roberson, Jr., started the opening four games of 2020 before suffering a season-ending injury. His five receiving touchdowns were a team-high for the season, while his 474 yards off 22 receptions ranked third.

In the game against No. 25 Memphis, Roberson, Jr., had a season-high 243 receiving yards off five receptions with two TDs and was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week.

This is the third consecutive season for Roberson, Jr., on the list.

The Watch List announced today will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to 5 finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans, and previous winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for Jan. 12, 2022.
