Four Mustangs Named To Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List

MOBILE, Ala. (SMU) – Four Mustangs are listed on the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl Watchlist, as announced Thursday. Grant Calcaterra, Danny Gray, Reggie Roberson, Jr., and Jaylon Thomas are among players recognized.

Mackey Award Watch List honoree Calcaterra is entering his first season on the Hilltop, after playing three seasons (2017-19) at Oklahoma.

As a junior, Calcaterra saw action in five games, making three starts, but missed the majority of the season due to injury. He registered five catches for 79 yards.

Following his sophomore season, he was named All-Big 12 first team. In 14 games, Calcaterra had 26 receptions for 396 yards and six touchdowns. As a freshman, he was selected All-Big 12 honorable mention after playing in all 14 games. He registered 10 catches for 162 yards and three TDs, which tied for eighth most by an OU freshman.

Gray, who was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, started all eight games played in 2020, registering 33 receptions for 448 yards and four touchdowns. He also added three carries for 30 yards and a pair of TDs, and ranked second on the team with 684 all-purpose yards.

He was the Mustangs' leading kick returner with nine returns for 180 yards, while adding two punt returns for 26 yards. His 206 combined kick return yards ranked ninth in the American Athletic Conference.

Roberson, Jr., opens 2021 on multiple Watch Lists, including the Maxwell Award, Biletnikoff Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List.

He started the opening four games of 2020 before suffering a season-ending injury. His five receiving touchdowns were a team-high for the season, while his 474 yards off 22 receptions ranked third.

In the game against No. 25 Memphis, Roberson, Jr., had a season-high 243 receiving yards off five receptions with two TDs and was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week.

Outland Trophy Watch List selection Thomas helped the Mustangs to top-25 national rankings in red zone offense (9th, .920), total offense (12th, 494.5), passing offense (13th, 318.0), scoring offense (15th, 38.6), third down conversion % (19th, .469) and first downs (21st, 251).

In 2021, Kylen Granson accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl and was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft as the 127th overall pick.

The Reese's Senior Bowl is the nation's most prestigious college all-star game, as it annually serves as the first step of the NFL Draft process, which explains the hashtag, #TheDraftStartsInMOBILE. The Reese's Senior Bowl had 106 total players drafted and 36 selected in the first three rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft. This year's game will be held Feb. 5, 2022 and broadcast on the NFL Network. Practices will be live on ESPN and NFL Network hosts a daily recap show each evening in primetime.
