If Army declines, then choose UAB or SDSU. Also consider shoring up basketball by adding someone like St. Louis or VCU for all sports except football.

Quotes per Mike Aresco:

"We would want institutions that would enhance our brand and had the resources to be as competitive at the top level. If there are schools interested in us that would enhance our brand and be a good cultural and competitive fit, then why wouldn’t we consider them?"

Athletic department revenue, Air Force in the Mountain West, East Carolina (AAC) and Colorado State (Mountain West).

The top options are likely to start with UAB, a rising power in the G5 located in the heart of the Deep South. Several others may fit that mold, including Air Force, Army, Colorado State, Boise State, North Texas, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina and Arkansas State.

The most important thing for the AAC is that these teams have large enough fanbases or a large enough opportunity to grow a fanbase that they can salvage their media deal.

Aresco said his conference plans to move "deliberately and expeditiously" to add two to four teams and beef up the league to 10 or 12 following the three departures. Aresco declined to name specific schools the AAC is interested in, but said it would only "entertain institutions that have shown an interest in us."

"Ultimately we want to be stronger than we were," he said. "We think there are schools interested in us who would help us do that.”

San Diego State is by far the best candidate along with Boise State. San Diego State brings great basketball too which we desperately need now that UConn, Houston, and Cincinnati are gone.

Memphis will second that suggestion

If the AAC truly wants to be the "American" Athletic Conference, then a coast to coast arrangement including all the service academies (Navy & Army for football only and Air Force for all sports if they prefer) and enough current MWC members to form a 14-18 member conference is probably the best way to go. To offset Army & Navy as football only members, invite Gonzaga to join Wichita State to enhance the basketball side of the equation.

Let's face it: none of these schools are going to increase the conference's media rights to significantly impact the amount of revenue each school gets, but it would arguably combine the "best of the rest" and allow ESPN, FOX & CBSSN options to have live programming for 12 hours on football Saturdays so the conference has some negotiating leverage. It would also allow for regional play and a championship game.

I'm just not convinced that either the AAC or MWC can cherry pick members from the other conference and we know the Big XII might come knocking on the door to steal additional members. Aresco has his work cut out for him, that's for sure!

As long as the AAC is the highest paying G5 conference and has ESPN as it's TV partner, anything can happen.
