New b12 - Most Likely Not For Long

Postby Specktaker » Sun Sep 12, 2021 2:36 pm

Of course, the new big12 is a house of cards. Every single member except maybe Houston would rather be somewhere else. If the dominos fall sooner than later it’s possible it may not get off the ground before it even starts. It certainly won’t last long. The P4 conferences will have to expand - BYU will eventually get into the Pac12, Iowa St. and Kansas to the Big10, West Virginia and possibly even UCF to the ACC. While those conferences may not really want these members, they most likely will have to take them to compete for TV revenue.

That leaves TCU, Rapelor, Okie St., Sand Aggie, UH, K St. and Cincy who are located in Ft Worth, Waco, Stillwater, Lubbock, 3rd Ward, Manhattan and Cincinnati. Basically, one butt ugly bunch. But we’d still join them… Anyway here’s another thought -

If you were the ACC and wanted expansion – maybe into Texas, which of these schools would you take? Especially if Clemson and NC end up in the SEC?

SMU has quite a bit in common with a number of the ACC institutions, Wake and Boston College aren’t any bigger than us, academically we hold our own and Dallas is clearly an ace in the hole opening the Texas TV market and recruiting opportunities.

ACC would never lower themselves to take Houston. SMU and Tulane likely would meet their standards.

There are plenty of rumors here in North Carolina about the Big 10's possible interest in UNC. The Tar Heels fit the bill in that they are another AAU school, as is Duke. As great a rivalry as UNC & Duke have, it could certainly continue as a non-conference rivalry. Note Virginia and Georgia tech are also AAU schools.

The SEC inviting Clemson and UNC is bordering on a monopoly. Hope it never comes to that!

This is part of what is lost in the realignment talk. FSU and Clemson eventually will find their way out of the ACC and into the SEC. The PAC will eventually need to expand beyond just 12 teams. The music hasn't stopped playing yet and the eventual need to expand by the PAC, BIG 12, and ACC will add chairs.

There's a lot of truth in this thread, including that the B1G and SEC both are potentially interested in some schools (particularly UNC).

The only thing I disagree with is that the ACC would look down on Houston. Hell, we admitted freaking Louisville.

Any ACC that SMU could potentially join would be significantly weaker than today's ACC, but it's not impossible.

When I was at SMU back in the dark ages, the ACC wasn't very highly thought of as a football conference. Of course, that was a time when Texas, OU & Arkansas were all serious contenders to be declared national champions by sportswriters, as that title was awarded back then. The ACC was known for closely contested high scoring games that I'm sure were very entertaining, but they didn't have much respect nationally. Sounds familiar.

The ACC between Duke’s decline as a national power (mid-1960s) and FSU joining (1991) was definitely a weak league, often Clemson and seven dwarves at best.
