Luke Fickell

Postby PonyPride » Wed Sep 15, 2021 12:56 am

When USC canned Clay Helton, the speculated started about who will replace him. One name that has been mentioned frequently has been that of the Cincinnati head coach, who already has been asked about the vacancy annd if he has interest. (Naturally, he didn't really offer much of an answer). But it does raise questions:

1. If he jumped for SC's money, how would that impact the Bearcats?
2. Impact on recruiting?
3. Could it impact the Big 12 move at all?

Would Cincy come after Sonny?

I guess Cincy pays their coach a bit more than SMU.

But I can't really see Sonny leaving for Cincy.

First, they've been offered membership and they accepted, so its a done deal. I also think WVU wanted Cincinnati as a travel partner and probably doesn't much care if they are good or bad, they happen to be good right now. I think WVU would seriously consider bolting the Big XII if Cincy had not been added. But, if he leaves, it will hurt the Big XII brand unless they get a great coach to replace him. Look no further than Coastal Carolina.

Unless the Big12 has an out in their initiation process, I doubt or bet they can't do it. Agree with others that this helps keep WVU from trying to wine and dine ACC. It's probably still not enough but will keep them at bay.

I don't see them coming after Sonny. Nothing against him but there are other teams making more noise. I guess from a recruiting perspective he might look valuable but alot of those recruits wanted to stay near home (kind of our shtick). I doubt Sonny wants to leave but I guess never say never.

The only place Fickell will go is up I71 to Columbus.

Don't kid yourselves about West Virginia. They would leave the Big XII for an ACC invite in a heartbeat, but yes, having Cincy & UCF joining them in the eastern time zone is a plus for WVU.
And Cincy will have more $$ to invest in a replacement for Fickell if he is offered and accepts the USC job, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on that offer.

Someone was saying on the radio the other day that wherever he coaches next year (Cincinnati, USC, somewhere else), Fickell is going to get a big raise ... and his contract will include an out clause if Ohio State opens up.

I can think of another prominent former Cincinnati coach who ended up and is doing well in LA.
