The idea from the ESPN announcer that the LB should anticipate the QB slidind was ludicrous. He didn't even think about sliding until he looked to his left and saw Hailey zeroing in on him. He was just trying to avoid the hit at the last minute and got caught in a bad position.

As I saw it, the refs got 3 calls wrong on that one play

1. Targeting
2. Late hit
3. QB clearly fumbled but for some reason they didn't address that in the targeting review.

To sum up, the AAC officiating crew has and will continue to suck in perpetuity

I think the announcer was agreeing with you, actually, and saying that it's stupid of the refs to be telling defenders that they need to anticipate that the QB might slide.

The guys calling the game were split with one all about protecting the QB (defenders anticipating the slide) and the other saying the QB has a responsibility to protect himself, arguing Tulane's QB didn't slide early enough

It was the right call all around. Late hit, no targeting. Man, that was a violent shot.
