Mordecai Named Davey O'Brien Award Semifinalist

FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) – Tanner Mordecai was today named one of 20 semifinalists for the 2021 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.

Mordecai is second nationally with 34 passing TDs and 24.2 points responsible for per game, while also ranking in the top 10 for passing yards (7th, 2.887), passing yards per game (7th, 320.8...), completions per game (8th, 25.56), passing efficiency (8th, 172.8...) and total offense (9th, 338.3).

He has at least four TDs in five of nine games and has passed for 300+ yards in seven of nine this season. His seven TDs against ACU broke the SMU single-game record, and his 34 passing TDs tie the SMU single-season record and are 14 more than any other player in the conference. He also has nine consecutive games with 2+ TDs, which ties for second for a Mustang.

Mordecai is also a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award and is listed on the Manning Award Watch List. He earned back-to-back AAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after wins at La. Tech and against UNT, and earned his third after the win over Tulane.

The next step in the process will be to select the award's three finalists based on voting from the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee as well as the second round of the Davey O'Brien Fan Vote, which will take place on the award's three social media accounts—Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. The top five vote getters on each platform will receive bonus committee member ballots which will be added to the votes cast by the National Selection Committee.

To participate in the Fan Vote, fans must like the original Davey O'Brien Award post highlighting the quarterback. Each round of the selection process will offer two one-week voting periods for fans.

The three finalists will be tabbed on Nov. 23. The winner will be announced live on Dec. 9 on The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.

The Mustangs host UCF on Saturday at 11 a.m. on ESPNU. For tickets call 214-SMU-GAME or click here.
