If so, does that doom the conference to mediocrity?

totally fitting. he helped make this conference a G5 bottom feeder. Now below conferences like MWC and sunbelt. So now he gets to make it even worse with his philosophy of mediocre or less.

I thought Aresco was appointing Hart the AD Chair...not the Commish, at least I don't think Aresco is leaving any time soon.

I believe Aresco signed an extension thru 2025 in the last couple of years. I doubt he is going anywhere.

From AAC Press Release:

“I would particularly like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our Board chair, Tulane President Michael Fitts, and our outgoing Athletic Directors chair, Michael Kelly of South Florida, and to thank them for their support and important contributions to our conference. I welcome Rick Hart of SMU as our new Athletic Directors chair. Rick has had a distinguished career at SMU and I look forward to working with him as we navigate this transformative period.”

So yes, this could just be Hart filling a chairperson role and not him moving from SMU to AAC. It's not very clear, but now that I re-read the news release, that's maybe all this is.
