SMU Athletics Celebrates Record Fundraising Year
New gifts and pledges to the Mustang Club surpassed $70 million

Jun 27

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Mustang Club broke the all-time fundraising record with $73 million in gift receipts and new commitments for the 2022 fiscal year, which ended May 31. The totals represent an increase of nearly $47 million from the previous fiscal year. It is the first fiscal year in which cash donations and commitments have eclipsed $70 million since the Mustang Club was founded in 1935.

Through the generosity of Mustang donors, cash gifts rose 71% from fiscal year 2021 and totaled $36 million. The best-ever performance resulted from the contributions of 3,105 donors.

Record giving was punctuated by:
• $50 million commitment from the Garry Weber Foundation to create the Garry Weber End Zone Complex. This represents the largest gift in the history of SMU Athletics.
• $2.5 million commitment from the Hickman Family for the construction of the Holt Hickman Outdoor Pool.
• $2 million commitment from Jerry Pittman '58 to endow the SMU head men's golf coach position.
• $1 million commitment from the Armstrong Foundation to establish the Vision 2025 Football Support Fund.

"The generosity of our SMU Mustang Club members has been a part of the fabric of our fanbase for decades," said Director of Athletics Rick Hart. "Mustangs understand philanthropy, and the support of our donors is propelling SMU Athletics to an exciting and promising future."

Giving societies flourish
Record membership to the Circle of Champions, plus first-time support for the newly-created Vision 2025 Football Support Fund, provided over $5 million in gift receipts and commitments for fiscal year 2022. Together, the Circle of Champions and the Vision 2025 Football Support Fund represents SMU Athletics' two most elite giving societies, with donors contributing a minimum of $100,000 per year in operational support for membership.

SMU Giving Day reaches new heights
SMU Giving Day witnessed a new record in Athletics giving, with over $700,000 received from nearly 1,500 donors. In total, Athletics giving day cash gifts were up 56% year over year from fiscal year 2021.

Mustang Club Board leads the charge
Led by President Will Howard, gifts were made by every member of the Mustang Club Board of Directors, which serves SMU Athletics as a peer-to-peer fundraising and advisory committee. Through their personal donations and SMU Giving Day fundraising efforts, total board production eclipsed $600,000 for fiscal year 2022.

Campaign impact
Cash gifts to Mustang Excellence Funds surpassed $1 million for the third straight year, cash donations for capital improvements were up 120%, and receipts for endowments were up nearly 3,000%. Gifts for the purpose of purchasing season tickets accounted for just 7% of all cash donations received, making 93% of all SMU Athletics donations 100% charitable.

All gifts contribute to the University's comprehensive $1.5 billion campaign SMU Ignited: Boldly Shaping Tomorrow. The campaign has raised more than $880 million as of May 31.

"These numbers are encouraging and humbling, especially when you consider the very real challenges that institutions of higher learning have faced the last two years," said Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development Matt Peters. "SMU alumni, family and friends have yet again found a way to step up and support the University we all love. The future is bright."

Will some Conference ever give us the chance to show what we can do as P5?

I don't think we've finished higher than 5th in AAC football since its inception 9 seasons ago. If we can't show what we can do in the G5, it's going to continue to be tough sledding getting a P5 invite.

I believe the poster was taking about what we can do financially.

Without P-5 revenue, we are financially hamstrung in the long run. Take a look at TCU, and the wise investment they have made in facilities and infrastructure. This is where the balance of their Big 12 money has gone in the past years that the previous AD approved. It made a difference, and made their rather mundane campus have a better than expected sports jewel in its midst.

That said, without a singular heavy hitter (like Memphis has), this is a significant move. As far as P-5, if it is going to happen, it will be the next three years, and it will be the ACC.
