Mordecai Named To Maxwell Award Watch List

PHILADELPHIA (MFC/SMU) – Tanner Mordecai was today named to the 86th Maxwell Award Watch List as announced by the Maxwell Football Club. The award is presented annually to the best player in college football.

Mordecai was a semifinalist for the award in 2021, and the 2022 recognition gives the Mustangs a player on the list for the fifth consecutive season (Shane Buechele 2019, 2020; James Proche 2019; Reggie Roberson, Jr. 2020, 2021; Ulysses Bentley IV 2021).

Mordecai threw for 3,628 yards (12th NCAA) and a school-record 39 touchdowns (5th NCAA) in 2021, while his 41 total TDs responsible for were also a program record. His 308 completions ranked second at SMU, while his 454 attempts were ninth. In all, he posted eight 300-yard games and five games with 4+ passing TDs and six with 4+ total TDs. He also ranked in the top 10 nationally and led the conference in points responsible for (248, 6th NCAA), points responsible for per game (20.7, 6th NCAA), completions per game (25.67, 8th NCAA), passing yards per game (302.3, 10th NCAA) and total offense (319.2, 10th NCAA).

His seven passing TDs in the season opener against ACU set the SMU single-season record, while his 427 yards against Tulane were ninth.

Mordecai was also a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards, and was a second-team All-American Athletic Conference selection. This season, he has already picked up accolades from Pro Football Focus, Dave Campbell's Texas Football, Phil Steele Magazine and Athlon Sports.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Nov. 1, while three finalists will be unveiled Nov. 22. The winner of the Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Award Show on Dec. 8. The formal presentation will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on March 10.
