Mordecai Recognized On Davey O’Brien Award Watch List

FORT WORTH, Texas (Davey O'Brien Foundation/SMU) – Tanner Mordecai was named one of 35 quarterbacks and 12 returning semifinalists as a member of the 2022 Davey O'Brien Award Preseason Watch List, the Davey O'Brien Foundation announced Tuesday.

The Mustangs have had a quarterback on the watch list each year dating back to 2019, with Shane Buechele joining Mordecai as a selection in 2019 (semifinalist) and 2020.

Mordecai threw for 3,628 yards (12th NCAA) and a school-record 39 touchdowns (5th NCAA) in 2021, while his 41 total TDs responsible for were also a program record. His 308 completions ranked second at SMU, while his 454 attempts were ninth. In all, he posted eight 300-yard games and five games with 4+ passing TDs and six with 4+ total TDs. He also ranked in the top 10 nationally and led the conference in points responsible for (248, 6th NCAA), points responsible for per game (20.7, 6th NCAA), completions per game (25.67, 8th NCAA), passing yards per game (302.3, 10th NCAA) and total offense (319.2, 10th NCAA).

His seven passing TDs in the season opener against ACU set the SMU single-season record, while his 427 yards against Tulane were ninth.

This season, he has already picked up accolades from the Maxwell Award, Pro Football Focus, Dave Campbell's Texas Football, Phil Steele Magazine, Athlon Sports and the East-West Shrine Bowl.

The official Davey O'Brien Midseason Watch List will be released on Oct. 18, and will contain all active quarterbacks from the Preseason Watch List, all players honored as a weekly Great 8 recipient through the season's first seven weeks and any additional quarterbacks approved by the selection subcommittee.

The Midseason Watch List will then be pared down to the 35-player Davey O'Brien QB Class of 2022 on Oct. 25. Fan voting on social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) will again play a role in the semifinalist, finalist and winner voting totals when combined with the national selection committee's ballots.

Sixteen semifinalists selected from the QB Class will be named on Nov. 8. The Foundation will announce the three finalists two weeks later (Nov. 21). The 2022 Davey O'Brien Award winner will be unveiled live on ESPN on Dec. 8, during The Home Depot College Football Awards. The 46th Annual Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner honoring the winner will be held Feb. 20 at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
