Slade-Matautia Named To Butkus Award Watch List

CHICAGO (SMU) – Mustang Isaac Slade-Matautia was today named to The Butkus Award Watch List, which honors the nation's best collegiate linebacker.

Slade-Matautia saw action in all 12 games in 2021 after transferring to SMU following three seasons of action at Oregon. He registered 31 tackles, including 2.5 TFLs and a sack, added a team-high two interceptions for 27 yards and had a fumble recovery and two pass breakups.

He opens the 2022 season on the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 List.

The watch list features 51 linebackers, mirroring the legendary "51" pro jersey associated with the award's namesake, [deleted] Butkus, who was recognized by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history. The Butkus Award is focused on recognizing linebackers who consistently play off the ball on their feet in a two-point stance in traditional form.

The award semifinalists are expected to be named Oct. 31 with finalists to follow Nov. 21. The winner will be named on or before Dec. 7. Appearing on the watch list is not a requirement to win the award. All 2022 Butkus Award winners will be honored at a televised event on Jan. 21 at the Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa in Rancho Mirage, California.

Congrats to ISM, but I honestly would have guessed that Jimmy Phillips would be the nominee.
Doesn't matter now. Hope they're both picking up honors at the end of the season.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
