Mordecai Earns William V. Campbell Trophy Nomination

IRVING, Texas (NFF/SMU) – Tanner Mordecai was recognized today as a nominee for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the National Football Foundation announced.

Named in honor of the late William V. Campbell, the former chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University and the 2004 recipient of the NFF's Gold Medal, The William V. Campbell Trophy® has become the most prestigious and desirable "academic" award in college football. The trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.

Criteria and Selection Process
* A senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility;
* Have a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale;
* Have outstanding football ability as a first team player; and
* Have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

Mordecai threw for 3,628 yards (12th NCAA) and a school-record 39 touchdowns (5th NCAA) in 2021, while his 41 total TDs responsible for were also a program record. His 308 completions ranked second at SMU, while his 454 attempts were ninth. In all, he posted eight 300-yard games and five games with 4+ passing TDs and six with 4+ total TDs. He also ranked in the top 10 nationally and led the conference in points responsible for (248, 6th NCAA), points responsible for per game (20.7, 6th NCAA), completions per game (25.67, 8th NCAA), passing yards per game (302.3, 10th NCAA) and total offense (319.2, 10th NCAA).

In the community, Mordecai has worked with Oklahoma City Veterans, Meals on Wheels (Oklahoma City/Norman), the Detente Collective, Big Event (SMU/OU), Bridges Safehouse, Waco baseball and football youth events and volunteered at local soup kitchens and churches.
