SMU OC Casey Woods Named Broyles Award Nominee

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Broyles Award/SMU) – Mustang Offensive Coordinator and tight ends coach Casey Woods was today announced as a nominee for the Broyles Award. Presented by the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation, the award honors college football's top assistant coaches.

SMU ranks seventh nationally in passing offense (325.9), ninth in scoring offense (40.3), 11th in total offense (486.4) and 13th in redzone offense (.917).

"Casey has done a tremendous job implementing our scheme and leading our offense in our first year," said Head Coach Rhett Lashlee. "His attention to detail and ability to relate to our players and staff has helped our offensive unit be highly successful."

Woods' tight ends have 37 catches for 404 yards and eight TDs in 2022.

Wide receiver Rashee Rice leads the nation in receiving yards (1,167) and receiving yards per game (116.7), while ranking fifth in receptions per game (7.7) and eighth in receiving TDs (9). Quarterback Tanner Mordecai ranks in the top-15 nationally for passing TDs (8th, 27), points responsible for per game (19.3), points responsible for (11th, 174) and total offense (12th, 320.6).

The Mustangs set American Athletic Conference and SMU single-game records for TD passes (Mordecai, 9) and total TDs responsible for (Mordecai, 10) in the 77-63 win over Houston on Nov. 5. They also set the SMU and tied the AAC record for points in a game (77) and points in the first half (56). Mordecai also tied the NCAA record with seven TD passes in the first half.

The 51 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches.

A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semifinalists, five finalists from the list of nominees, and an overall winner.
