Special Teams

Postby docabel » Sat Nov 26, 2022 9:06 pm

For maybe the first time this year (or in several) we may have won a game because of special teams.

Outside of the 2 kickoffs out of bounds, I would dare say our best coverage?

Outside of the "fair catch" on the kickoff, a couple of field position changing returns by Daniels

Most importantly was the blocked extra point (aided by the botched snap and hold) which was the difference in the game.

Without the missed extra point, they could have kicked the easy field goal for the win instead of throwing the INT in the end zone.

I get your point in the last paragraph, but without the botched extra point they most likely would not have gone for and gotten the 2 point conversion later.

Those kickoffs out of bounds may have prevented long kickoff returns.

I suspect that part of the plan in the offseason is to upgrade our athleticism in the LB and S rooms. Increased quality and depth at those positions will improve special teams coverage significantly.

Sometimes, the bad coverage we have had for years is a sign that the overall athleticism and depth on defense isn't where we want it to be.

Our special teams aren't very special.

He was a good signing, that's for sure. Never saw a guy kick so many dead center thru the uprights
