College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams in 2024 season

The College Football Playoff announced Thursday it will expand to a 12-team event starting in 2024, completing an 18-month process that was fraught with delays and disagreements.

The announcement comes a day after the Rose Bowl agreed to amend its contract for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, which was the last hurdle CFP officials needed cleared to triple the size of what is now a four-team format.

I hadn’t heard anything about this. Would this be top remaining G5 schools making a new conference? Any reporting on this possibility?

The 12 team format was inevitable and from what i read, the odds of it being in ‘24 were greater than 50/50 as they would strong arm the Rose Bowl if necessary, which apparently they did.

Every source that I’ve read has never mentioned any correlation between the ‘24 expansion date and expansion.

IMO, this is a positive development. If we aren’t a P5 conference member, we stand a better chance of making the 12-team playoff as the best-ranked G5 team. Kind of like being the tallest midget. But we still get our foot in the door with the opportunity to pull off an upset, earn playoff revenues and enhance our profile and recruiting.

On the other hand, if we make our way in to a P5, we won’t soon likely make the playoff, but we’ll earn more $$$ and enhance recruiting.

We win either way....as long as we win.

And if you become a perennial participant, P5 will want you. Especially, if you pull of an upset or two.

It would have to be expanded to 120 to be relevant to SMU.

Not necessarily. Top G5 program gets an automatic bid. Not far-fetched to say we could consistently win the new look AAC and be routinely ranked as one of the top G5 schools each year.

That's ridiculous. There is no reason we can't do what Tulane has done this year.

don't agree- there are two reasons: first, RL will probably be a good coach someday but he is not close to being equal to Willie Fritz- at least this season or next.
Second reason- the admin.- their admin is interested in winning, ours in being mediocre.

Although our solo journey through the Valley of Death cost us decades of relevance, we are closer to becoming a perennial Top 25 team than not.

A move to a P5 conference accelerates our progress and this possibility is increasing more probable, based on our improved results, continued investments, and attractive recruiting and media markets.

I find the negativity a self-imposed straight jacket, which we have tossed off.

The next month or so will be revealing and very rewarding, as well as breaking ground on Gerald J. Ford Stadium Expansion.

There was no reason why we couldn’t have been a TCU or a Houston or aTulane , but we weren’t. We continue to stumble.

dukie- no hatred. I am just results oriented. If those two worked in American industry they would have been fired years ago.
