Canzano: Pac-12 officially exploring four expansion schools

A few nuggets:

No interest in UNLV

Doesn't expect CO St to be invited as a 3rd or 4th expansion member as Pac12 already owns Denver Market

Several Pac-12 sources say their deal will match or beat Big 12 deal. One source called matching Big 12 deal a "layup". One Pac-12 DC stated “We have better schools, better markets and better ratings.”

Apple and/or Amazon are in play for a piece of the Pac-12 rights. But being new to the space, negotiations are moving forward, but a little slower than expected. Both companies' HQ's are on the West Coast.

Pac-12 CEO Group has a board meeting next Tuesday.
"Rhett Lashlee not only has the top G5 transfer class, it’s one of the best classes in the country, period.”
–– Chris Vannini, The Athletic

I love the optimism in his stuff. Do much better than the guy that pretends he’s in the room. At the end of the day we all want to rid the shackles of the death penalty. Congratulations to all working on this that have the university’s best interest. I love the positive comments on the article as well. They want us.

Love this quote.
SMU would be the 4th highest academically ranked University in the PAC if invited. Tulane would rank even higher. Tulane beat USC this year. SMU plays OU and TCU next season (they have beaten TCU in the previous two years and only lost by a TD+XP this past season). I think P5 members look down on the G5, but with the right coach and P5 status for recruiting they will compete favorably.

He also says:
there are some interesting forces at work trying to undermine the effort. Be careful with what you see reported, particularly from non-sourced entities.

Wise words.

When everything is said and done it's going to be interesting if there is a reckoning on this deal.

A) It's surprising if the Pac-12 has no interest in UNLV. Not that it's a marquee athletic program, but Vegas offers facilities and infrastructure to host championship events that few can match.

B) They "own" the Denver market as long as Colorado stays ... but isn't there still some chatter about the Big 12 trying to snatch away Colorado, Utah and the Arizona schools? If so, Colorado State and maybe Boise or Fresno (or both) might suddenly become exceptionally attractive targets.

The chatter was invented by a Big 12 consultant named Karen Brodkin who wants the PAC to fail. And it chaps me to see it repeated. Corner schools have zero interest in the Truck Stop conference.

Even worse, I read that she is a UC-Berkeley graduate!!!! Kind of like our alums that have invested in TCU rather than SMU.
