From SI.com:

College football expansion update: 7 more ACC teams now exploring options
It's been thought that the ACC couldn't lose teams to realignment because of its contract, but that might not be the case if these schools can hatch a plan
JAMES PARKS

Amid the latest push for college football expansion and conference realignment, it was thought that ACC teams would stay put because of the league's air-tight grant of rights agreement that doesn't expire until 2036, but now some schools could be looking for a way out, according to a report from SI insider Ross Dellenger.

Seven current ACC members — Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina, Miami, NC State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech — have met in private to determine how unbreakable the conference's current agreement really is.

VA Tech & NC St may have been in the meetings, but I question if they add incremental value to the SEC….I certainly don’t see B10 pursuing these schools

Nor do i see Virginia as an SEC fit so they better know in advance they have a B10 invite

Same goes for Miami. I think SEC selects FSU over Miami, would SEC really want 3 Florida schools??? That means Miami would also need pre-knowledge of a B10 invite

Agreed about FSU over Miami. FSU and Clemson seem to profile/fit the SEC more.

So that leaves the Big East defectors, Wake, Duke and GT as remaining members. Nothing surprises me anymore. But UVA is hardly a strong candidate for football although VT knows it can't go somewhere without UVA since UVA had to allow them into the ACC. The question is would either of those conferences want to expand into Texas? 7 schools is a weird number for a conference. Usually want 12 so you can have a championship game and at least 9 so you can have 8 conference games. So, who would they want to add? Duke and GT and let the Big East teams and Wake go? Add ND? Chaos is our friend right now.

You are right. I can see the SEC nabbing Clemson and Florida State. I can see the Big10 stealing NC. I'm not sure that the other programs in the ACC fit the bill for SEC or Big10 expansion. I wouldn't mind seeing a conference with the ACC left-behinds and SMU. We would actually be a great fit in such a conference as it would contain several great academic schools. Oh and Miami: A great football history, but not markedly more desirable as a TV attraction than SMU. We really should be playing schools like Virginia, Duke, Georgia Tech, Wake, Syracuse, BC, Pitt regurlarly.

Most logical fits:

#1 - Clemson to SEC - Most Obvious

#2 - UNC to B10, followed kinda closely by
#3 - FSU to SEC, then a bit of a drop off and

#4 - Virginia to B10

then a meaningful drop-off of such a magnitude that you wonder if the other schools bring value to either B10 or SEC

By the way the odds of the ACC failing are 50/50. The odds of the Pac 12 failing were never above 10%

Tomorrow, next week, a decade from now. . . the ACC will break up. The SEC will take Clemson and FSU and that'll be the end of it. Then UNC, UVA, Notre Dame, etc. will have to make some really tough decisions. Sad, but it seems inevitable.

More realistic update from a seasoned ACC reporter (who used to cover SMU a while back), Andrea Adelson:

https://www.espn.com/college-sports/sto ... tion-model

And this really does make sense. The inequity between conferences is egregious, but the inequity within conferences has to be addressed as well. Boston College isn't Clemson in terms of revenue-generation. I do wonder if FSU will really be the huge beneficiary they think they will be, though, if their on-field performance doesn't continue to trend up after a good 2022.

Nothing is going to happen in the short term. This is just people needing to drive clicks before the NFL and College football camps open up in August. Nobody would actively rush to the open market in the current economic conditions. They will wait for the PAC to play out this summer, and then if anything ever happens, maybe next year. But this is just "making news" to drive clicks.

Completely agree. Nothing will happen with ACC for 3 yrs minimum.

Really good Twitter thread on ACC status quo and why it is likely to remain (mostly) the status quo for a while. SMU mentioned as one of four schools that the ACC has considered, by the way:

ND can choose it's conference. Academically elite and a huge revenue generator. Their
is a reason they are still independent in FB. Big 10 has been trying for eons to get them.
