13 Mustangs Earn Preseason All-AAC Recognition From Athlon Sports

DALLAS (SMU)- SMU had 13 football players named to the Athlon Sports preseason All-American Athletic Conference team.

Earning first-team recognition were offensive linemen Justin Osborne and Marcus Bryant, defensive lineman Elijah Chatman and kicker Collin Rogers.

Last season, Osborne earned second-team nods on the All-AAC, Dave Campbell Texas Football All-Texas, and Phill Steele All-AAC teams after making 11 starts for the Mustangs and playing in all 13 games as a junior.

Bryant made 12 starts in his junior season and was selected to the Pro Football Focus All-AAC second team.

Chatman started 11 games for the Mustangs in 2022, registering 39 tackles. The senior added four tackles for loss, three sacks, and added a blocked kick and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Chatman was a 2022 second-team All-AAC selection and earned spots on the DCTF All-Texas second team and the Phil Steele All-AAC third team.

Rogers earns a preseason first-team nod after being selected as a College Football Network Freshman All-America Honorable Mention and a PFF All-AAC first-team selection in 2022. He was perfect on PATs with a school-record 56. Rogers registered 106 points (fifth AAC) and was 16-20 on field goals, including a perfect mark under 49 yards.

Running back Jaylan Knighton, tight end RJ Maryland, cornerback Charles Woods and safety Jonathan McGill all earned preseason second-team recognition.

Wide receiver Jordan Kerley, linebacker Ahmad Walker and punter Ryan Bujcevski collected third-team honors and Preston Stone and Roderick Daniels, Jr. landed on the fourth team.

The Mustangs kick off the 2023 season against Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Season tickets are available at SMUMustangs.com/tickets or by calling 214-SMU-GAME. For any additional ticket questions please contact 214-SMU-GAME or email tickets@smu.edu.

Chatman gets first-team honors, but it sounds like he might not even start, with the Miami transfers and now the Oklahoma guy. That says we have the deepest defensive line we've had in ages.

Yes, he'll play both offense and defense. The coaches have made no secret about their excitement about Chatman on both sides of the ball.

always wondered what Michael Carter would have been like on 3rd and 2...Drayton and Kovar were capable of getting it, but it WOULD have been worth watching...
