Stone Named To Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

DALLAS (SMU)-- SMU quarterback Preston Stone was named to the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List on Thursday in a release by the Wuerffel Foundation.

College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service, and one of the most meaningful awards in collegiate sports, The Wuerffel Trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida who parlayed his success on the football field into a lifetime of service.

Stone comes into the 2023 season poised for a breakout campaign with the Mustangs after spending the past two years in a backup role. The Dallas native, a highly-touted recruit coming out Parish Episcopal, appeared in six games last season. He posted career-best numbers in completions (11), passing yards (219), rushing yards (24) and passing touchdowns (1) in his first collegiate start last season, a 45-34 victory at Tulsa.

Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities’ Sports Information Departments and will close on October 16. An up-to-date list of nominees can be found at wuerffeltrophy.org. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 2nd, and finalists will be announced on November 28th. The formal announcement of the 2023 recipient is scheduled to be made on December 7th or 8th during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN, and the presentation of the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy will take place on February 17, 2024, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, GA.

The preseason honors continue to roll in for SMU as a handful have already earned preseason recognition by Phil Steele, Athlon Sports, Dave Campbell's Texas Football, East-West Shrine Bowl, College Football Network, Outland Trophy and the Ray Guy Award.

The Mustangs kick off the 2023 season against Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Season tickets are available at SMUMustangs.com/tickets or by calling 214-SMU-GAME. For any additional ticket questions, please contact 214-SMU-GAME or email tickets@smu.edu.
