two small private schools going at it. Not much national interest there but give TCU credit for their significantly improved attendance at their games

It sucks. But its FS1, how many casual fans are checking FS1 for content.
There was a LOT of competition for that same timeslot on better networks.
FSU v Clemson ABC 6.71M
OU v Cincinnati FOX 2.17M
Rutgers v Michigan BTN 1.94M
Virginia Tech v Marshall ESPN2 319k
WKU v Troy ESPNU - 29k

I would not expect SMU to beat the first two, as they are major networks and good teams. Michigan is just...Michigan.

OU v Tulsa wk3 on ESPN2 had 641k - were those numbers primarily for Tulsa or OU
Tulane (last year's Cinderella) v USM wk3 Sat 4 pm ESPNU 53k
La Tech v SMU wk1 ESPNU Sat 12 72k

Just keep winning and the numbers and recognition will increase - see Tulane last year. And its network, opponents, competition, and time - all those come into play for ratings.

11 a.m. kickoff. That means, 11 a.m. central, 10 a.m. Mountain and 9 a.m. Pacific. Numbers are going to be lower for those games. That's actually a pretty good number considering the feed, the competition and the time slot.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Many — most? — of them were gone really early

You could also look at this way. TCU likes to claim they were the reason for the huge audience against CO. First game for Deion - I'm sure everyone tuned in for TCU. So where were all their fans when we played?

CO v TCU 9/2 12pm FOX 7.26M - This game dominated the narrative and the eyes that day. And it turned out to be a competitive game. Only FSU v LSU that night 7:30 ABC 9.17M beat it.

But there was virtually no competition
Northwestern v Rutgers CBS 2.68M
Virginia v Tennessee ABC 2.46M
Arkansas St v Oklahoma ESPN 970K

and then there was SMU
La Tech v SMU wk1 ESPNU 72k - no hype, bad network, never stood a chance.

Interesting that FS1 ratings are better than ESPNU. Big 10 Network is solid. Any idea how ACC and SEC Networks compare when teams play G5 opponents?
