Don’t count SMU out of the New Year’s Six

Postby Webmaster » Thu Nov 02, 2023 1:19 pm

Per a story today in theathletic.com

"Only one team in the country has outscored conference opponents by a larger margin [than SMU]: No. 3 Michigan, which has dominated Big Ten foes 229-31."

"If the Ponies get there without another loss and are sitting at 10-2, it’ll be interesting to see whether a win over Tulane could boost them over Air Force for that New Year’s Six berth..."

Also, the surging Mustangs are sitting at #3 behind only Texas and TAMU in The Athletic's Texpert Power Rankings.
"Rhett Lashlee not only has the top G5 transfer class, it’s one of the best classes in the country, period.”
–– Chris Vannini, The Athletic

It would help a whole bunch if someone could knock off AFA.

UNLV and Boise are both decent and traveling to Hawaii always sucks. I think they’ll lose one, or more. They haven’t played anyone worth a damn, either.

Plus the Mountain West Conference Championship.

While it would be nice to host the conference championship game, I would rather Tulane win out and be highly ranked facing a 10-2 SMU team that will also be ranked. You have to figure if it aligns that way, the winner of that game gets the NY6 bowl, regardless of what AFA does. Of course, it would be great to not even worry about it and have AFA lose one game, which I think they will.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

There are still a bunch of G5 teams ranked ahead of us in the AP/coaches polls. Beating the sh** out of NTSU would help our cause...

Tulane
Liberty
Air Force (still)
Fresno State
Toledo
James Madison (ineligible)
