SMU’s Preston Stone Earns Manning Award Quarterback of the Week
Sophomore Helps Mustangs Remain Perfect in AAC

NEW ORLEANS (November 2, 2023) – Preston Stone of SMU has been voted as the week nine Manning Award Quarterback of the Week. He earned the honor over seven other Manning Award Stars of the Week in the Allstate Sugar Bowl's online voting contest.

Stone completed 15-of-20 passes for 371 yards and threw three touchdowns in a 69-10 American Athletic Conference victory against Tulsa. The sophomore came out ready to play as he opened the game with a 74-yard touchdown delivery. That throw was one of many as he had a career-high for passing yards while only playing the first half.

The Dallas native was named the AAC Offensive Player of the Week for a second time this year. His performance helped keep the Mustangs unbeaten in conference games this season at 4-0 and bowl eligible for a fifth straight year with an overall record of 6-2.

This Saturday, the Mustangs will travel to Houston for a meeting with Rice for the Mayor's Cup on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (CST) on ESPNU.

Stone’s closest competitors in this week's online voting were Haynes King of Georgia Tech and Arizona’s Noah Fifita. King tallied his third 4-TD performance of the year as he completed 23-of-30 passes for 287 yards, including a five-yard TD pass with 4:28 remaining, to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 46-42 ACC upset of No. 17 North Carolina. Fifita was 25-of-32 for 275 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair of fourth-quarter TD passes, to lead the Wildcats to a 27-24 Pac-12 victory over No. 11 Oregon State.

The Manning Award selected 30 quarterbacks for its preseason Watch List and then added 15 midseason additions to the Watch List on October 19th. Finalists will be named on November 30, and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.

In its first 19 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 14 different schools and from four different conferences. The Southeastern Conference (Stetson Bennett, Bryce Young, Joe Burrow, Mac Jones, Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) leads the way with eight Manning Award honorees, while the Big 12 Conference (Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Vince Young, Colt McCoy, and Robert Griffin III) has had five winners. The Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) has had four Manning Award winners. Alabama (Bryce Young and Jones), LSU (Burrow and Russell), Oklahoma (Murray and Mayfield), and Texas (McCoy and Vince Young) have each produced a pair of Manning Award winners.

All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.

Preston definitely needs another year of development playing against ACC competition. As a Johnny football fan, he should know that act won't play well in the NFL
