Just like some of the schools that have jumped into a more lucrative conference home, some players who jump into the portal will find they may not be enriched, may not find new schools where they can earn playing time and sadly, far too many will be left homeless and will have blown an opportunity to at least earn a college degree with a "full boat" 'ship

According to their Twitter accounts, offensive tackle Jacob Waller, tight end Nolan Matthews-Harris and defensive lineman Stephon Wright also are entering the transfer portal.

Wonder how many guys enter the portal when they find out we are actively recruiting competitive transfers for their positions?

It is the coaching staff's responsibility to ensure that the team is ready to compete next season.

If a less experienced player is next in line, but maybe they aren't quite ready for that next step, someone is probably going to be brought in to fill that spot and make sure that we are ready to compete.

I can't fault some players for getting impatient with that approach and leaving to have an earlier shot at playing time, and I wish them the best. All of these guys are good people with a tremendous work ethic (in some cases some unfortunate injuries), and I am sure they will do well wherever they end up!

Every coach in every sport at every school should be trying to recruit over the players already on the roster. It's the nature of trying to improve a team.

Many players will be disappointed in their marketability. I saw this statistic:

"Add up every college football player who appeared in the transfer portal over the course of Monday, and you get a grand total of 1,127. That represents a 44 percent increase from the previous record-setting day of 780 entries on Dec. 5, 2022."

Report that SMU Mustangs should be among the beneficiaries of Transfer Portal additions.

I feel pretty good about our roster going into the ACC, except in the trenches.

With the seniors graduating, we desperately need starter level NT / DL transfers this cycle.

Also worth noting...

With how thin we are at DL, it's interesting to see how many of our FROSH DLs have entered the portal (three so far). They must know we're going hard in the paint for DL portal transfers.

McCord left The Ohio State University because he wasn't going to start moving forward. My son played in the AJGA senior showcase tournament this past weekend in Vegas. I walked with a coach from Notre Dame on the last day who shared with me that most athletes who are seeking an "upgrade" to their situation have their landing spot unofficially, wink wink, sorted out before they do so. There are work arounds to make those conversations happen off the books.

That's an NCAA violation but who's counting
