King Promoted To Quarterbacks Coach

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Football Head Coach Rhett Lashlee announced the promotion of D'Eriq King to quarterbacks coach on Wednesday.

King, who had been serving as an offensive analyst this year, will take over duties immediately for the Mustangs after Jonathan Brewer left the program to become the offensive coordinator at Duke.

"I think D'Eriq is made for it," said Lashlee. "He's made a huge impact on our entire staff. Our coaches on defense and our coaches that didn't know him were very impressed how he came in and in a short amount of time, displayed his presence, how he relates to the players, and his professionalism.

“There is a lot of growth and development still to happen there for [King], but it's going to happen fast. I think he has a high ceiling and a bright future."

A native of Manvel, King has a wealth of experience already at the position, having starred collegiately at Houston (2016-19) and Miami (2020-21), with the final two years coming with Lashlee as the offensive coordinator for the Hurricanes.

He passed for 8,378 yards and 76 touchdowns in five seasons between the two schools, recording at least 2,500 yards passing and 500 rushing yards twice in his collegiate career.
