AP: Advocates for College Athletes Unionizing

Postby Water Pony » Thu Mar 07, 2024 11:31 am

Below is a link to an interesting Associated Press article on the vote by Dartmouth MBB players to unionize. What strikes me about events like this, which references the failed unionization efforts years ago by Northwestern U. FB players, is the initial organizing actions has been limited to private universities, such as a recent USC lawsuit, since state universities are not affected by NLRB oversight.

I can't help but think the private schools in the ACC and BigXII may be exposed to similar activity at some point, including the intention by some to determine student athletics are employees.

Combined with the efforts by BiG10 and SEC to further distance themselves from the two other P4 conferences, we may have to prepare ourselves for further changes in the economic and organizing model for college sports. Further, the NCAA has been defanged and will increasing have less influence in its ability to level the playing field.
