Potts began his career as a sports writer and then sports editor of the Winchester Star. In 1972, he became sports promotion director at the University of Maryland, creating the first corporate partners program in college athletics.
He served as athletic director at Southern Methodist University from 1979-81 and was vice president of public relations for the Chicago White Sox in 1981-82.
Potts founded Sports Productions Inc. in Dallas and later formed Russ Potts Sports Productions in Virginia, promoting such events as the Game of the Century matching Georgetown and Patrick Ewing against the University of Virginia and Ralph Sampson.
Potts is now a member of the Virginia State Senate.
